Jonas’s Mines & Dunes Adventure: Knowing When to Change the Plan

Not every adventure ends exactly as planned. Sometimes, the real challenge is knowing when to listen to your body and find another way forward.

Jonas started the long piste and gravel version of our Mines & Dunes route with a strong first day, reaching the checkpoint in Chefchaouen by the evening.

Deep into the Rif Mountains

On day two, Jonas continued from Chefchaouen, crossing the remote pistes of the Rif Mountains and pushing on to kilometre 240. The following day, he reached Kissane at kilometre 263 – but the tough riding was beginning to take its toll.

After two demanding mountain climbs in Talassemtane National Park, Jonas had run out of energy. His message to us was short and honest:

“Ich habe mich gestern an den 2 Bergen im Talassemtane zerschossen und habe null Kraft in den Beinen.”

In other words: the two climbs had completely drained his legs, and he had nothing left in the tank.

Jonas made the difficult decision to call it a DNF (Did Not Finish) on the long route.

A Second Chance in the Desert

But that wasn’t the end of Jonas’s adventure!

Later, he picked up the journey again at Talzent, around kilometre 625, and continued along the shorter route towards the finish.

His final destination was Chez François Rekkam in Boudnib, where he arrived a few hours before fellow rider Rich. In the desert camp, the two riders had time to relax, share their stories, and look back on their experiences out on the route.

Sometimes, the Finish Line Changes

The long Mines & Dunes route is a serious challenge, and the Rif Mountains can demand more from riders than expected. Jonas may not have completed the long route as originally planned, but he adapted, got back on his bike, and made it to the finish.

And in the end, that’s what adventure is all about: knowing your limits, changing plans when necessary, and enjoying the journey.

Well done, Jonas – and we hope the memories from the Rif Mountains and the desert stay with you for a long time!
